It will forever remain a cruel irony that colorism exists in a black country and that light skin is automatically linked to a ticket to a better life. With this flawed view in mind, people project a certain kind of insecurity towards light-skinned Nigerian women. And this insecurity most often births these annoying questions;

1. “You are only fine because you are fair”.

Are they also graduates because they are light-skinned? Do they also have more sense because they are light-skinned?

2. “Your color can be bought in the market

Then go buy it and stop being so pressed.

3. “You are bleaching”

There is the annoying and silly notion that people who are light skinned must have bleached out their “real” skin color.

4. “Which cream do you use?”

This question is a veiled insult because it implies point number 3 above. So when they ask what cream you use, it is not because they are impressed with your skincare results, but instead, because they assume you are successfully bleaching and want you to show them the way.

5. Calling them “Yellow”.

Dear Nigerians, “Yellow” as a name for every light skinned woman qualifies as body shaming. Unlearn it.
