Married Nigerian women are usually placed on a very uncomfortable and needless pedestal. It’s like marriage in itself is an identity that the society expects them to take up and this identity of course comes with expectations. Most of which are unreasonable and archaic. Here’s a list of 5 things Nigerians suddenly start expecting from women when they get married.
1. Kids
If they don’t get a child dedication invitation a year after they attended the wedding, they start with the unsolicited advice-giving and annoying snooping.
2. A wardrobe from the 1960’s.
Nigerians just have it at the back of their minds that married people generally should look like married people. That’s code for they should tone down the fashion because what are they still trying so hard for? They expect you to give up the palazzo’s, the sexy wrap gowns and skirts, the cute 2 piece sets, the playsuits, and trade them all in for wrapper and MTN t-shirts. They also expect your makeup to suddenly stop being on fleek.
3. Married person sense.

4. They expect you to become less opinionated.
They expect you to be meek, gentle, and ever forgiving because your new mentor is the Proverbs 31 woman. You have fought the good fight of feminism when you were single, but now it is time to “cool down” and submit to your husband. *insert vigorous eyeroll*
5. They expect you to be vigorously religious.
Married Nigerian women are suddenly expected to be more religious. Less social outings, more religious activities.
6. Less career ambitions.
Because somehow in the hierarchy of things by Nigerian standards marriage trumps every other thing. And if you’re married then it’s time to stop chasing after career goals.
