Education isn’t seen as important among today’s generation, and we have genuine reasons for that.

The most important reason being that education isn’t needed to make it in life. Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates are prime examples that you can achieve your dreams without a university degree.

But we fail to realise that they still had access to the tools they needed to succeed, as well as opportunities a lot of people don’t have. If we had our way, we would have never gone to school.
Our parents had to force us to go to school, to read our books and do our assignments.
But we will all agree that we definitely wouldn’t have turned out the way we did if we got what we wanted.
For those that see education as important, some of them face another challenge, which the ability to receive quality education. Four million Nigerian children have no access to basic education AND 10.5 million children are out of school. Which is why, when we see a child who loves education and is willing to go the extra mile to do well in school, we’re impressed.

So when the photo of this little girl circulated on social media, it quickly went viral.

She was studying by the roadside, under the streetlight, while selling groundnuts at night. That’s dedication.

We’re glad to say that Groundnut Girl has finally been found!

We will keep you updated with further details as time goes on.

UPDATE:

Groundnut Girl’s real name is Chineye Kenneth. She’s a 14 year-old SS1 student of Westley Girls Yaba, Lagos. Her father is late and her mother makes groundnuts for a living. Chineye and her sister hawk the groundnuts on the lagos traffic after school everyday, to help their mother out. That was how Mosopefoluwa Odeseye saw her and took the first picture, which went viral. After so many requests to know who Chineye was, the same lady found her. A fund has been opened to raise money to help Chineye and her family. The target is two million naira. This will make it possible to transfer Chineye to a private school, help her mum start a new business, so she can take better care of Chineye’s siblings and also pay for her higher education. Visit Impart Fund for more details on how to help.
