The exciting new singing competition MTN Y’ello Star is back and the last episode was just incredible. 12 contestants with MAYBE’s had to battle for a spot in the competition. We spoke to a few contestants about their journey with music, their ambitions and their influences.

Fayfay Diamond

My journey with music started about five years ago when I joined the church. My major motivation for being in this competition, apart from winning it, is to improve myself and get better. I want to be better than I was when I came in and I’m going to apply myself to that.

My music is influenced majorly by Tiwa Savage and Ariana Grande. For me, my dream is to make my music heard around the world.

Melody

I joined the church choir at the age of 12 and music has been a lifelong journey for me. I came here not only to win but to gain more experience and all the knowledge I can get.

I draw my musical influences from many places, but the most important for me are Chris Brown, Johnny Drille, John Legend and Jonathan McFennon. My main drive is for my music to be heard globally and that’s what I’m going to do.

G-Isaac

I got interested in music through old Indian movies. I loved the way they sang and I soon began to join in the singing. Over time, I discovered that people actually loved my sound. So I decided on music.

I’m here for one reason: for Nigerians to see me and know me. I’m a very care-free guy who doesn’t like serious, stuck-up environments. I like to just do my thing, and that’s why I’m here.

I am heavily influenced by Davido. I love him because he has a vibe, is full of passion and just wants to make money. I also love Wizkid, Chris Brown, and Usher.

Competing here doesn’t mean I’m only here for the money. I’m here because I love good music.

Catch the next episode on MTN Y’ello Star this weekend. Don’t miss it!
