The nominees for this year’s Emmys — TV’s biggest and most coveted prize — have just been announced, and a number of great shows and performers deservedly made the cut.
For the first time ever, three actors of Nigerian descent, Yvonne Orji (Insecure), Uzo Aduba (Mrs. America) and Jovan Adepo (Watchmen) are among those nominated.
Aduba, the four-time nominee
Uzo Aduba is no stranger to the Emmys. The Nigerian-American actress has been nominated three other times for her work on the Netflix dramedy, Orange Is The New Black. She won twice
This year, she is nominated in the ‘Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie’ category for her standout performance as Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman to run for president, in Mrs. America.
Two first-timers to the Emmy game
As for Yvonne Orji, this is her first-ever nomination for her scene-stealing work on the acclaimed HBO comedy, Insecure. She is nominated for ‘Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy’.
Rising star, Jovan Adepo also landed his first-ever nomination in the ‘Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie’ category for his memorable performance as Hooded Justice in HBO’s Watchmen.
The Emmys will take place on September 20.
